The Rabin Murder as a Sales Promotional Tool of the Media

The Israeli media is preoccupied with how to memorialize the Rabin murder.  Samet posits three ways – along with three specific events – that the media has exploited the murder for its own promotional uses.  The assassination itself has become “branded”.  Will there come a day when a stage will be lit by a neon sign that says: “A Star is Born: Song Competition in Memory of Rabin”.

He has a mocking view of the cynical use of Rabin’s memory by the media for their own self-promotion.  He cites examples of increased listening to the radio on Rabin’s Memorial Day; how an Internet news entity attracted more hits by replaying the clip of Rabin being shot for the entire day.  He also mentions how public memorial services have become a showcase for up and coming popular artists and singers.
