The triumvirate of Olmart-Peretz-Halutz is incapable of decisive action and long term decision making because of their shaky status. The black hole left by Dan Halutz has been filled by Yuval Diskin who has been frightening us with warnings that if we do not deal with the weapons stashes in the Gaza Strip it will be too late. But Diskin is really just trying to cover his own backside. If the IDF doesn’t undertake a massive incursion into Gaza – something which is unlikely to occur – Diskin is not threatened, because that would be a political decision. If the IDF does go into Gaza the casualties will be so great as to stun public opinion, and Diskin will be able to distance himself from responsibility by saying: I warned you from the outset.
