History is not literature. In literature it is perfectly permissible to view a problem from the perspective of different characters, each of whom is “right”. In history there are absolute truths. There is no doubt, for example, that slavery in America was exploitive and cruel, even if certain figures in a novel might sympathize with it and see its characteristics as “pleasant”.
