After many years of neo-liberal economics – which led to wide economic gaps and impaired the weaker strata of the population and the rights of workers – the Labor Party presents a social agenda, designed to indemnify and advance those who were hurt by the previous system. Many people oppose this agenda and view it to be a utopian vision, never to be realized, which will go so far as to jeopardize the country's security and its economic prosperity. There are also those who argue that poverty and gaps are inevitable in the era of globalization.
There is no basis to these fears: senior economists claim that there is a correlation between social equality and economic prosperity – and a society with internal strength (based on social justice and solidarity) will know how to protect itself against threats from the outside. Moreover, even in the era of globalization there are still welfare states in the West.
